Using Afghans & Blankets To Recover Seat Cushions

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
I covered this chair with an afghan purchased at a resale shop.

I chose a brightly covered afghan to cover the seat of this chair. The drab green paint against the vibrant colors of the afghan create a nice contrast.

I love tartan plaids, so when I saw this tweed slipper chair at a rummage sale I decided to leave the body as is and just recover the seat cushion. I chose to work with a tartan blanket and add on my favorite Union Jack pillow.

Inspiration From Nature

Autumn is the perfect time of year to go on long walks – natural beauty is everywhere. Bring a basket and let your kids fill it with acorns, leaves, twigs – whatever they find appealing. It is a simple way to enjoy time with your child and share a love of nature.

We found this Robin's nest on the ground; children marvel at the work involved in making it. It is a true work of art.

Take A Stand When It Comes To Pumpkins

I find heirloom pumpkins to be so striking, they deserve their own stand. Here I have repurposed some silver plated caserole stands to display my favorites.

Casserole stands are lovely, but I never use them for their intended purpose.

Decorating For Halloween With A Soup Sock

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Other than my friend, Ken – who is a gourmet soup chef, not many of us even know what a soup sock is. A soup sock is a loosely woven cotton bag that is used to hold poultry and beef parts when boiling for soup stock. A package of 3 costs less than $4.00 and can be found in the soup section of your supermarket. This provided me with an ideal web-like cover for my glass globes. Simply open the soup sock and slip it around your glass vessel and cut to size. Make sure the soup sock doesn’t hang over the top of the flame.

The loose weave of a cotton soup sock resembles a spiderweb - and fits easily around a glass vessel that holds a candle.

Inspired by Dutch still life paintings, I created my own tableaux with a monochromatic palet perfect for Halloween.

I spray painted the tray, candlestick and even my miniature pumpkins with a flat black paint.

I used silverplated pieces that were heavily scratched on of lesser quality.

Using Newspaper As A Filler In Floral Arrangements

Contrasts interest me - I enjoy the surprise of unlikely duos. I used newspaper and wrapped it around the stems of these gerbera daisies and tucked it in between the stems.

The colors I've chosen here make this appropriate for season.

The colors I've chosen, added to the fact that I used the financial section, help to make this arrangement scary enough for Halloween.
