Before Putting Away Christmas Supplies, Think About Valentine’s Day

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

It may seem a bit early, but taking a few minutes to think about reusing holiday decorations for Valentine’s Day will save you time and money in a few weeks. As you are packing away your ornaments and lights, keep an eye out for anything red or pink that, with a few additions can look entirely new and appropriate for use on Valentine’s Day. You may not want to start these projects yet, but you may want to select some items to put away in a separate box – so they will be easy to grab when the time comes in about 6 weeks.

These glittery heart lights are really stunning and easy to make.

Using a die cut in the shape of a heart (available at craft and paper supply stores) I punched out several hearts, created a cross-shaped slit in the center of each and slipped them over the bulbs.

Valentine's Day treat bags, made from mesh grapefruit packages are simple and fun to make - the kids can help.

Valentine's Day treat bags, made from mesh grapefruit packages are simple and fun to make - the kids can help.

We eat a lot of grapefruit in our home. At this time of year, they are at their best and are sold in red, plastic mesh sacks that have a certain look to them that inspired me to reuse them to make these delicate bags. This idea may not fit in with the concept of reusing Christmas decorations, however, I add it on here because you will want to start saving your grapefruit bags now in order to make these delightful little treats in February!

Start out by cutting the paper label off of the base of the bag.

Clementine Crate Tray

I love the Bagu logo on my clementine crates - it has a great look to it. A piece of linen fabric lines the interior and makes a charming tray for serving tea.

Still Entertaining For The Holidays? It’s OK To Take It Easy

My Dad and sister usually visit on the 26th of December each year, so we celebrate by having a Boxing Day brunch. After a busy Christmas Eve and Day, I like to keep the mood simple, but festive. Here are a few ideas that may help you pull together an easy and elegant table setting of your own in no time at all.

Two yards of burlap cover the table giving me that casual, textured look I like. Burlap is sold in most fabric stores for about $4.00 a yard.

I prefer to serve orange juice in stemware. It dresses up the look of the table.

Keep it easy - simple glass stemware paired with white dishes and napkins look wonderful against the rough, natural look of the burlap cloth.

Using a dye cut, I punched out tags to use as place cards.

Simple and calm, the table is ready for an enjoyable meal with family.

Glass Globe Garland

Plain glass ornaments hang from knots on a strand of jute to create a delicate garland that looks like a string of glassy bubbles.

Try hanging the strand in a window. The glass balls look great backlit with natural light.

Plain glass ornaments are available at most craft stores. To make this garland -I chose the smallest size globe I could find. Remove the metal caps from the ornaments. Cut jute to desired length and make several knots all along the strand - I spaced mine about 5 inches apart.

You could also use gold spray paint - but I was in the mood for silver.

Christmas Around The House

My living room. Inspired by Scottish style - I wanted to create a cozy, tartan-filled room this year.

My living room. At this time of year - I like to transform my surroundings and create a change that is refreshing - but can also be reversed easily when the season passes.

To add texture and interest - I draped the mantel wall with burlap.

This year I had the good luck (in my mind) to come across a large bag of old house numbers at a thrift store. Priced at only $1.00 - I couldn't pass it up. Little did I know at the time, I would use them on my tree this year - but the idea came to me and I ran with it. I used jute to hang them.

Wrapped In Style

To wrap my gifts this year I chose leopard and tartan printed papers. I love animal prints when paired with all sorts of checks and plaids - the combination of the two patterns create a pleasing contrast.

They're not just red and white anymore. Candy canes are pretty hip looking these days - grab a few boxes of brightly colored sticks to add to gifts.

Pinning Down A New Look

I chose pins similar in size, style and color. This works best on a thicker skirt material such as denim or corduroy.

A few things to consider regarding this idea – if you are around very young children – don’t try this. Toddlers will grab at the pins or accidentally scratch themselves on them. Also – choose pins with a smooth setting -  you don’t want to snag the lining of your coat.

Yuletide Yarn Wreath

Skeins of yarn left over from previous projects are put to work once again. This project is great to do with and for children. It is such a cheery looking wreath.

Skeins of yarn left over from previous projects are put to work once again. This project is great to do with and for children. However, it is such a cheery looking wreath, you may want to keep it for yourself!

I started out by making the base. You could by a foam wreath form at a craft store - however - used a firm paper plate cut into a circle and wrapped with batting. I then cut out from the back of sweater, a wreath shape that was about 1-2" larger than the plate wreath shape.
