This Is Not A Magritte

It's not a shirt – it's a creative experiment. The famous "ceci n'est pas" works of René Magritte inspired the thinking behind this t-shirt project. I picked up a plain, black shirt at Michael's for $3.99 and created this simple design – mixing French and English for fun.

I cut off the sleeves and created an asymmetrical v-neck; with the leftover fabric, I created a few yo-yos to add embellishment at the shoulder.

"This is not a pipe." My inspiration – The Treachery Of Images, 1928-29 Rene Magritte .

To create this look, I stuck 1/2-inch adhesive letters (available at Office Depot) to the t-shirt.

Using a sponge brush, I applied a flat gold fabric paint over the letters.

After about 5 minutes, when the paint was dry, I peeled the letters off with tweezers to reveal the text.

My daughter likes it.

Love it! It’s super fun! At first I thought you used bleach on it!

Thanks Heather! You could use bleach too – that would be cool. C

Sometimes a t-shirt is NOT just a t-shirt. Very cool. Looks good with the hat! Oh, and Alice likes the hanger.

Darcie – Alice PREFERS the hanger! 😉

I love this idea! I have to do some school shopping tomorrow with the kids…and I am definately making a stop at Michael’s to pick up a t shirt and fabric paint…I can make my own sticky letters with my scrapbook I just need to figure out what i want to write on my shirt. My kids will definately want to get in on this too so I better get a shirt for them too. I stumbled across your blog just now and I am so glad I did! Great ideas!

Hello again! I just wanted to tell you that I made my shirt and it turned out adorable!! It was so easy and really fun! I loves farms and everything about them…we live in Pennsylvania and there are farms all over…so I made my shirt to say “farms are life” and I even put a little dairy cow after the word “life”. My son likes cars so I helped him cut out a Dodge Ram emblem and my other son is going to draw up one of his video game characters. My sister liked my shirt so well that she wants me to make the same one for her daughter! I’m sure I will make a few more with different designs…having fun!
