There’s a guy in our neighborhood who is quite clever with his outdoor holiday decorations — it’s obvious that he’s put a lot of time and thought into his design. We drive passed his house nearly every day and my kids always let out a cheer from the back seat as we go by. His decorations make us happy and they have for years now – so, I decided to make him a holiday/thank you card and drop it in his door. I figure he should know that his hard work is having a positive effect on the world…

My parents live in a different state and I visit them several times a year. There was a house whose yard looked like a junkyard. During a visit last year, I noticed there was noticeably less junk. In an effort to acknowledge what must have taken tremendous effort, I dropped a note in the mailbox out front noting their efforts and saying “Keep up the good work”. The next time I visited, I was pleased and amazed to see the place was almost totally clear of junk. I don’t know if my words of encouragement helped, but I know they certainly didn’t hurt!
